Week #2
On Monday, students began to settle into their schedules, and are becoming more comfortable with the expectations.  During this week, we will be introducing the students to their new roles in their chosen professions.  These students will also be assigned to specific corporations, where different grade levels will be working collaboratively.  Hopefully, by the end of the week, we will have a solid start toward successfully completing the Olympic Project.

Monday - July 18th
Today, students were informed of their positions, as well as placed into their corporations.  During the morning they were expected to work on reading and math intervention, as well as complete group activities.  We took a brief moment to allow students to work in their departments, where job expectations and requirements were explained to them.  In the afternoon, the groups met as corporations.  They were expected to create a company name, as well as record their driving questions.

Tuesday - July 19th
Students continued working through the morning routine of: reading and math intervention, team-building activities, sustained silent reading, and departments.  In the afternoon session, the corporations continued working on building their companies brand name.  Students are now beginning to see how collaboration and teamwork can lead to great success and accomplishment.

Wednesday - July 20th and Thursday - July 21st
Students continued working through the morning routine of: reading and math intervention, team-building activities, sustained silent reading, and departments.  The corporations are really beginning to produce solid work and wonderful results.  Company webpages are beginning to come to life. Robots are taking shape and beginning to move about the rooms.  Research is being conducted to provide program engineers with the most in-depth, cutting-edge information.  Accountants are conducting budget reviews and creating checks, ledgers and billing statements.  The CEOs have figured out how to get the people within their corporation to "click"!!  As teachers, we are truly excited about next week.  Stay tuned in!!

Review of the First Week

Students and educators were very busy the first week!!  Below is a list of the various activities that were performed in the first (4) days:

  • Students were given baseline assessments in Math and Reading, utilizing the STAR assessment system.
  • With these baseline scores, educators were then able to strategically place students into appropriate, ability-based intervention programs, which focused on Math and Reading Comprehension.
  • In addition, the educators rolled out the STEM-based PBL competition, which was designed around the upcoming Olympic Games, incorporating a robotic's program into the project.
  • Students received training on how to create, and revise, a professional resume that would be used to apply for careers in: robotic engineering, programming, business management, marketing and media, scientific research, and accounting.
  • Students were also required to complete a job application and sign up for two career interviews.  The educators provided valuable modeling, and other various forms of instruction, on how to respond in an actual interview.  Students prepared for two-days by interviewing their classmates, peer-revising fellow students, and conducting research into their chosen fields, by completing a detail-specific graphic organizer.
  • On Thursday, students were allowed to once again practice their interviewing skills with various peers and teachers.  Interviews began during the afternoon session.  Teachers and building administrators served as interview committees for each career.  Candidates were asked various questions regarding their strengths and abilities.  Depending upon their responses, they were then given a score.  Students were placed in their respected positions depending upon scores.
